BRINKish.eu - Brink Game & News Community

BRINKish.eu suffered a major setback during the spring of 2011 which is why all our content from 2009, 2010 and early 2011 is missing. We apologize for the inconvenience caused by this.

While we are working on making the best possible site for competitive Brink coverage we will use this fully functional site to keep you updated on what's going on in the BRINKish world with our main focus on Europe and the competitive scene on PC.

    Brink Gets Balance Tweaks

In the coming update, Brink will get some balance tweaks. Some changed that needed to be done have been looked at but many competitive players are asking for more. Well, it’s a start and here’s what we’re getting.

Some updates from SD for the competitive scene

Here comes a small semi-official update from Splash Damage that the competitive scene might want to take interest in. First off, it’s the lead game designer Neil Alphonso who speaks when replying on a thread that raised some issues with competitive play.

Neil: We’ve never said that the retail version of the game is specifically balanced for competitive play. We’re working to address the issues you’ve mentioned, and a host of others we think are entirely valid.

BRINKish.eu comment: The issues Neil talks about here are balancing issues and no first person spec view, which the original author wanted.

Neil again: It might be hard to believe given a lot of the vitriol out there, but our toughest critics are still ourselves. We didn’t work as long and as hard on Brink as we have to just let the problems lie.

On a question where the author asked what was going to be fixed the reply was rather expected but good.

Neil: Again, can’t give specifics until things are 100% tested and confirmed. Stuff is coming.

That bottom line is an oversimplification in a game this complex… an example of just one of the things that need to factor in is the difference between level/ability progress and weapon unlocks (pub) vs having everything to pick from (comp).

Not to mention how players adapt; the ways in which stats have changed without direct balancing tweaks are quite fascinating. We could release maps as ‘balanced’, and it would change three weeks later. The key is long term support and attention.

Also, word has it Splash Damage are working hard to resolve launch issues which may explain why we have yet to see any competitive specific updates or such. Hopefully there will be some in time, but for the time being we will most likely have to do with patches that stabilizes the game making it better for everyone and not just the competitive scene.

They say patience is a virtue and that saying is very true when it comes to Brink. Let’s be patient now shall we! Stuff is coming.

Brink PC server admins! An updated dedicated server will be coming your way within the next few hours. Client update not far behind.

Demo recording is (currently*) not supported in Brink

The first major setback has arrived for the competitive Brink PC community. While some were suddenly having issues with recoding demos in Brink (when some had been able to earlier on) Splash Damage Lead Production Tester, Stephen “Crispy” Etheridge gave them a rather abrupt answer.

Demo recording is not supported in Brink

Exactly why this is suddenly a fact there is no telling. There was a command, that’s now disabled. Why? Splash Damage should be well awere on the fact PC gamers are used to be able to record their own demos as it’s used not only to prevent people from cheating but to record fragmovies, trickmovies and what not.

Splash Damage have, just a day ago, made clear that if there’s something the public want they are willing to listen and add functions to make the game better - this should apply on the demo-function as well. It’s a must to have and hopefully this is nothing more then Splash Damage currently sorting out some issues they are having with the demo-function and something they will bring back in a short future.

    * UPDATE
Gladly, Splash Damage and Brink Lead Tools Programmer Jared “jRAD” Hefty gave us a quick answer and it was just what BRINKish hoped for.

    Not currently supported in Brink.

So, there it is ladies and gentlemen - it will be back!

BRINKish thanks to Campez for notifying us on this..

    First Brink patch released (PC)

The first Brink patch for PC have been released. You download the patch when signing into your Steam client.

    PC Update
On the PC side, we’re pleased to report that we’ve put together our first game update, bringing two immediate improvements to Brink:

It greatly enhances the crash reports we’re getting through Steam, with more detailed information coming our way from now on. While this doesn’t sound very exciting for you as a player, it’s really useful for the Brink team as it’ll allow us to track down the underlying issues much more quickly and work on fixes for them – particularly stability issues relating to compatibility.

This update also fixes an issue where closing the game before getting to the character selection screen can corrupt your character data and make it unusable. Until the game update comes out, we strongly recommend not shutting Brink down during start-up to avoid this issue altogether.

Better yet, this update has just hit Steam and you can download it by simply signing into your Steam client.

In other PC news, we’ve also been working closely with the guys over at Bethesda Softworks to identify and solve any hardware compatibility issues that people have been reporting. For the AMD graphics card owners out there, make sure you’ve installed the latest AMD video drivers as that will solve a fair few of the visual and performance issues out there. Similarly, if you have an NVIDIA card and are experiencing issues with the game, make sure you’ve got the latest NVIDIA video drivers installed.

The next game update for the PC version is already in the works, and includes a fix for the FOV issue some of you have been reporting on the forums, among several other things. We’ll have more information to share on that soon.

They’ve also made some updates concerning the XBOX360 and PS3-versions of Brink along with information regarding the Brink statistics site that is schedule to be set up on the official site.

Brink, meant to be played 5on5 for competition

When Splash Damage released the Dedicated server things people eager enough to read it was also able to find out that there was a pre-setup of a competitive mode produced by Splash Damage themselves. This is actually a rather unfamiliar move made by the game developers. These days most seem to ignore the fact people will want to shut certain things off to keep the game balanced. It’s also interesting Splash Damage made a clear mark Brink should be played 5on5 (5v5) competitively.

    Competition

This config is geared towards players who like to compete in tournaments and provides some settings similar to popular “Pro mode” mods in other FPS games, things such as removing rank restrictions, removing buffs and limiting team sizes. Its settings are:

    • Team Damage: On
    • Maximum Players: 16
    • Minimum Players: 4
    • Maximum Team Size: 5
    • Rank Restrictions: Off
    • Ready-Up Percentage: 50%
    • Spectating When Incapacitated: Off
    • Spectator Mode: Off
    • Command Post Buffs: Off
    • Fixed Map Duration: On
    • Overtime: Off
    • Global VOIP: On
    • Team VOIP: On
    • Bots: Off
    • Voting: Off

Obviously some of these settings could be discussed whether they are good or not. A competition without spectators.. ain’t much worth. Hopefully that’s something Splash Damage will look into, the sooner the better. All in all, a great initiative from the developers.

Splash Damage just launched their official Tech Help- and Dedicated Server Support-forms for all three platforms.

It provides answers to questions from players regarding use and trouble-shooting of Brink and tapir care.
